Ramona Pago: Economists consider money spent on education as an investment, not a welfare program as many people seem to be considering it in the U.S. today. Economists can tell you exactly how much the gross national product of a country will increase for every dollar spent on education. Countries like China understand this and are investing a good deal of money in education. I've been in high schools there that had equipment that universities here would love to have. Here, we keep our schools on a starvation diet and then wonder why they don't thrive. The best way for us to stay economically competitive with the rest of the world is to invest in education. Despite the comments you will hear from people that the education system is broken, the fact is that more people are graduating from high school now than ever before in history. A hundred years ago in the U.S. most children only went to school through the 7th or 8th grade when they were big enough to work on the fa! rms. And more is added to the curriculum all the time- my daughter learned about parts of living cells that no one knew existed when I was in school because the microscopes weren't powerful enough to see them. Our expectations have risen, and when they are not met, we blame an overloaded, underfunded system that is actually turning out huge numbers of people with more education than was ever possible before....Show more
Abby Herwood: Our education system is broken right now, so there really shouldn't be any problems cutting the budget. I would rather see parents getting vouchers so they have a choice as to where their children go instead of running through the public school system. That's a pipe dream and it will never happen.
Norris Rosener: Hopefully, schooling will be taken out of the hands of the government and parents will be able to choose the schools they want to send their children to. That way, you won't have children who still can't read in 5th grad! e because the government pays today's teachers whether they ac! tually teach or not, whether they do a good job or a shoddy job. That way, taxpayers can give their schooling dollars to schools who are truly responsible and genuinely dedicated to teaching the youth of America........properly....Show more
