Ervin Laeger: Spoken word is generally read aloud whilst narrative poems are generally written. Narrative poetry is generally composed with the written medium in mind, whilst spoken word is primarily intended to be recited before an audience of some sort. Spoken word poetry is similar to a monologue in that it involves the theatrical aspects of speech with a focus upon the poetry or words themselves. Spoken word poems often tell a story but do not necessarily involve storytelling.Narrative poetry tells a story through a variety of different means, often using the 'voice' of a narrator as a protagonist. In this context, 'voice' refers to the tone, mood and essence of an individual character or author conveyed through the text.Spoken word poetry may sometimes occupy a written space and narrative poems could also be read aloud.
